Venice Summer Institute 2018: Evidence-Based Policy Advice: How it is Produced and Used

6 – 7 June 2018

Venice International University, San Servolo, Venice

The last years have seen an increasing public interest in evidence-based policy advice. However, it is unclear how much of this advice is atually taken up by policy makers, and how successfully these recommendations are implemented. This workshop will bring together stakeholders involved in the generation or implementation of evidence-based policy advice. Participants will discuss the state of affairs in different countries (including the UK, the US, and Germany) and in different policy domains (including innovation, health, and education). An important feature of the workshop is that we will not only involve producers of evidence-based advice from universities, research institutes and think tanks, but also its addressees, i.e., bureaucrats and journalists. In terms of suitable papers, the organisers will be looking for examples of large-scale evaluation studies that have had or are expected to have impact on the design and implementation of (public) policy.

Keynote speakers: Hilary Hoynes, University of California, Berkeley, and US Commission on Evidence-Policy Making, and Henry Overman, LSE and What Works Center for Local Economic Growth

Scientific organizer(s): Englmaier, Florian / Schnitzer, Monika / Winter, Joachim
