German Construction Companies Expecting Problems with Material Supplies into the Spring

With the German construction industry booming, problems sourcing material supplies are expected to persist until next spring. Companies believe supply problems will continue for an average of five months, according to a new ifo survey conducted in October. In the same survey, 38.0 percent of companies in building construction also reported disruptions due to delivery delays; in September the figure was still 36.3 percent. “The easing observed in recent months has come to a halt in building construction,” says ifo researcher Felix Leiss.

In civil engineering, meanwhile, the situation improved slightly: the number of companies with supply problems fell to 26.1 percent, down from 27.6 percent in the previous month. The building materials industry is energy-intensive and is feeling the effects of the sharp price increases of recent months. Wholesale prices for building materials also continue to rise. This is putting pressure on building construction in particular. “ In many places, companies in this business are planning  to raise construction prices,” Leiss adds.
