In Germany, Number of People Working from Home Barely Lower despite End of Remote-Working Obligation

The proportion of German employees who worked from home at least part of the time fell to 24.9 percent in April. The figure was 27.6 percent in March. This is the finding of an ifo Institute survey. “This means the number of people working from home remains at a high level following the abolition of the remote-working obligation on March 20. Evidently, many companies have permanently adapted to more flexible working arrangements,” says Jean-Victor Alipour, an ifo Institute expert on working from home. However, the ifo Institute had calculated a remote-working potential of 56 percent across the entire German economy.

In the automotive industry, the share of employees working from home fell considerably, from 28.4 percent to 17.8 percent. For manufacturing overall, the figure fell only slightly, from 18.6 percent to 16.3 percent.

It is in the service sector that remote-working options are still most widespread on average; here, the proportion fell to 35.3 percent, down from 38.7 percent in March. Among IT service providers, 72.3 percent of employees are still working from home, down from 76.8 percent in March.
