Companies in Germany Expect Material Shortages to Last until 2023

The shortage of materials in German manufacturing will continue for at least another 10 months, according to companies surveyed by the ifo Institute. At the same time, 74.1 percent of companies complained about bottlenecks and problems procuring intermediate products and raw materials in June. The figure was 77.2 percent in May. “The hoped-for easing in supply chains is constantly getting pushed back,” says Klaus Wohlrabe, Head of Surveys at ifo. “Supply bottlenecks are now unfortunately part of everyday life for many companies.”

In the key sectors of German manufacturing, the proportion of companies with supply problems remains very high. In the electrical and electronics industry, among manufacturers of machinery and equipment, and in the automotive industry, around 90 percent of companies in each area report that they aren’t receiving all the materials and intermediate products they need.

No industry expects supply problems to be resolved this year. The shortest expected duration of supply problems is 7.2 months in the metal production and processing industry, while the longest is 13.1 months in the beverage industry.
