The earthquake of 11 March 2011 had a huge physical impact on Japan's energy system. Quantitatively, however, the loss resulting from the switch-off of power plant capacity due to the suspicion that all power plants share a common design fault was more serious. Hans-Jochen Luhmann, Wuppertal Institut für Klima, Umwelt, Energie GmbH, presents the newly developed social technolgy "setsuden" that was developed in reponse to this loss. In his opinion, this could also be of particular interest to Germany in connection with the future turnaround in its energy policy.
