The German economy is currently split. While contact-intensive service industries are recovering strongly from the coronavirus crisis, value added in manufacturing is shrinking due to supply bottlenecks for key industrial intermediate products. Gross domestic product is expected to grow by 2.5 percent this year and by 5.1 percent next year. Compared with the ifo Economic Forecast Summer 2021, the growth rate for 2021 has thus been lowered by 0.8 percentage points and raised by 0.8 percentage points for 2022.
