The ifo Center for the Economics of Education examines the determinants and consequences of education from an economic perspective. Education has proven to be pivotal for the future prosperity of individuals and economies, as well as for equity and participation in society. To craft policies for economic well-being, it is therefore crucial to comprehend the factors that affect education and how various skills and degrees impact life outcomes. Organized into the following four areas, the Center’s research endeavors to enhance our understanding of how the state can shape educational institutions to empower people to harness the potential of a social market economy in light of contemporary challenges.

Education and Individual Outcomes: Skills, Labor Markets, and Well-Being

The Center investigates the role of education for individual opportunities on the labor market and in everyday life. It analyzes how various skills affect employability and social participation in a rapidly changing world. This includes aspects of vocational education and lifelong learning to cope with the digital transformation.

Education and Sustainable Development: Growth, Inequality, and Cohesion

The Center also delves into how education impacts the prosperity of society at large and long-run economic development. It analyzes the role played by student achievement in economic growth, equality of opportunity, and social cohesion. It also scrutinizes the role of education in historical economic development and its enduring effects.

Determinants of Education: Culture, Resources, and Institutions

The Center studies the factors affecting educational performance, particularly 1) cultural factors such as family, values, and norms, 2) educational resources, and 3) institutional structures of education systems. The research frequently draws upon extensive micro data from international student assessments. Topics encompass the role of patience, integration of children with migration backgrounds, teacher effectiveness, digital learning methods, assessment systems, mentoring programs, and the repercussions of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Governance of Education: Efficiency, Equity, and Policy Preferences

The Center scrutinizes how elements of the political governance of education systems such as examination systems, autonomy, competition, and tracking affect educational success and equity. It also investigates the feasibility of policy reforms and their acceptance among the population, utilizing an annual opinion survey on education policy. The evaluation of policies using (quasi-) experimental methods aims to infuse evidence-based policy advice into the political decision-making process.

The ifo Education Survey was developed by the ifo Center for the Economics of Education as part of the project “The political economy of education policy: Insights from an opinion survey” funded by the Leibniz Association. The ifo Education Survey is based on an annual public opinion survey of several thousand individuals who constitute a representative sample of Germany’s adult population.

The ifo Prussian Economic History Database (iPEHD) is a county-level database covering a rich collection of variables for all counties of Prussia during the 19th century. The Royal Prussian Statistical Office collected these data in a number of censuses over the period 1816-1901, with much county-level information surviving in the archives. These data provide a unique treasure for unprecedented micro-regional empirical research in economic history, analyzing the importance of such factors as education, religion, fertility, and many others for the economic development of Prussia in the 19th century. The service of iPEHD is to provide the data in a digitized and structured way.
