The social market economy in 2049 – what will become of our prosperity and who will share in it?

Like no other economic system, the social market economy stands for the successful combination of economic efficiency and social balance; it is regarded as the foundation for prosperity and stability in Germany. Competition, which keeps prices low, and welfare state protection are intended to keep the “size of the economic pie” and the “evenness of its distribution” in the best possible balance. This endeavor makes the social market economy an economic system that enables broad participation in prosperity and offers support to those who are dependent on solidarity-based assistance. The model has proven itself since the Second World War, even if the further development of the social market economy remains the subject of controversial debate.

On the occasion of the ifo Institute’s 75th anniversary, we want to reflect on how we can use this guiding principle to overcome important future challenges. What further developments of the social market economy are necessary to ensure that prosperity continues to grow and reaches all sections of the population?
