Innovation looks set to become the key management challenge of the nineties. The survey shows that german firms do face much the same pressure and challenges as their british counterparts. Yet german industry is notably more innovative than the british industry. This difference arises not so much from what the firms do how, but they do it. Above all, the difference is one of attitude. German success is found on a relentless determination to build competitive advantage from within, over the long term, through research, technology development and training.
