Fossil combustibles currently meet more than 80% of the global demand for energy and cause 57% of the anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. A decline in the use of fossil energy is not in sight. On the contrary, the worldwide dependence on fossil energy sources has increased enormously in the last three decades, and this trend is likely to continue. If the nuclear accident in Japan leads to a basic re-thinking of the use of nuclear power, this could mean an ever stronger reliance on fossil energy sources. In this situation, the idea of making fossil combustibles climate-neutral seems very appealing. A technology that is supposed to make this possible the so-called carbon capture and storage (CCS) has been tested worldwide for some time. In this article, the technological possibilities and their current stage of development are explained in detail.
