The growing use of irrigation facilities, combined with a lack of experience and knowledge regarding the proper use of artificial irrigation, have led to a massive increase in soil salinization in the last few decades. This soil salinization has made large areas of land unusable for agriculture. This land can only be restored at great cost and effort. This article in the series “Climate notes” offers an overview of salinization in farming areas and outlines possible countermeasures.
