On behalf of the Messe Düsseldorf GmbH and its subsidiary Düsseldorf Congress Sport & Event GmbH (DCSE), the ifo Institute conducted a study of the economic implications of trade fairs held on the Dusseldorf exhibition ground, as well as other events organised by the DCSE for the city of Dusseldorf, the state of North Rhine Westphalia and the Federal Republic of Germany. The results show that direct expenditure in an average trade fair and event year totals around 2.2 billion euros. Around 1.59 billion of this sum is spent in Germany. The aggregate purchasing power generated in Germany thanks to trade fairs and events totals just under 3 billion euros. Around 56% of this purchasing power is felt in Dusseldorf and 28.5% in the rest of North Rhine Westphalia. An average trade fair and event year secures around 27,700 jobs in Germany. In terms of their distribution, 16,664 of these jobs are located in Dusseldorf and roughly 24,200 jobs are spread across North Rhine Westphalia as a whole. Around 34% of all trade-fair and event-related jobs are in the hotel and catering segment. Roughly 29% of jobs are in trade and crafts and event-related services.
