Greater Shortage of Skilled Building Construction Workers in Germany

The shortage of skilled workers in Germany’s building construction has intensified, finds an ifo Institute survey. In October, 34.1 percent of construction companies reported a shortage of skilled workers, up from 33.5 percent in September. In civil engineering, that number fell to 36.8 percent from 37.9 percent in the previous month.

“The shortage of skilled workers is a fundamental problem for the construction industry. More than one in three companies can’t find enough staff. At the same time, demand for construction services remains very high, with order books full up,” says ifo researcher Felix Leiss. “In civil engineering, order backlogs have reached an impressive 3.8 months, while in construction they are at a record-breaking 5.2 months.”
