ifo Branchen-Dialog 2017 - Forum Dienstleistungen: Przemyslaw Brandt

The ifo Industry Dialogue is a platform for discussing current developments from a sector-specific perspective. Experts from companies, associations, politics and research discuss current industry developments, trends and challenges in the four industry forums Industry, Trade, Construction and Services. The conference, which the ifo Institute regularly organizes in cooperation with the Chamber of Industry and Commerce for Munich and Upper Bavaria, is sponsored by the Bavarian State Ministry of Economic Affairs, Energy and Technology.

Around 200 participants from business, science and politics discussed current developments and challenges in industry, trade, construction and services. After the welcoming address by Eberhard Sasse, President of the Chamber of Industry and Commerce for Munich and Upper Bavaria, Clemens Fuest, President of the ifo Institute, dealt with "Economic policy after the federal elections". The lecture was followed by the four industry forums. At the end of the event, Justus Haucap, Director of the Düsseldorf Institute for Competition Economics (DICE) at the University of Düsseldorf, discussed regulatory policy in a digitized world.

Productivity Development - where does the German Industry stand?

Not only against the background of a changing trade environment, productivity growth is central to maintaining long-term competitiveness. Digitalisation as a major issue - Trade in Transition

Despite positive sales developments, the retail sector in Germany is in a state of upheaval. Digitization is changing the value chain all the way to the customer, and existing business models are being called into question. Are German retailers adapting to online sales to a reasonable extent? How can stationary retailers create an optimal connection between online and offline channels?

Can Digitization Significantly Accelerate Construction?

There is unanimous agreement that there is still a high demand for additional apartments, energy-related modernisation measures or bridge refurbishment. As a result, the possibilities of potentially accelerating planning, official and construction processes are increasingly coming to the fore. Can digitalisation, for example through digital building data management, shorten construction times in the future?

Productivity Weakness in the Services Sector

Despite optimistic assessments of the current economic situation, the German service sector has long since been reported to be suffering from a productivity weakness. How do the German service industries compare internationally? Which reform proposals are currently being discussed as Germany's contribution to a more global European reform process?
