ifo Industry Colloquium 2018

7 November 2018 09:15 - 17:00

IHK Academy Munich, Orleansstraße 10–12, 81669 Munich
ifo Branchen-Dialog 2018 - Franz Josef Pschierer

The ifo Industry Colloquium is a platform for current topics from an industry-specific perspective. In its four sector forums – Industry, Trade, Construction, and the Service Sector – experts from companies, associations, politics, and research discuss current industry developments, trends, and challenges. The conference, which the ifo Institute holds regularly in cooperation with the Chamber of Industry and Commerce for Munich and Upper Bavaria, is sponsored by the Bavarian State Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development, and Energy.

In addition to industry forecasts for individual economic sectors, this year's industry dialogue focused on the topics of (digital) transformation from manufacturers to service providers, the role of services in global competition, the challenges of trade logistics in a digital environment and capacity bottlenecks in the construction industry.

Industry Forum

Transformation to Service Provider and New Requirement Profiles in the Industry

Global competition is changing fast: important digital industries are increasingly dominated by a handful of US giants, while China is striving for global technology leadership in ten key technologies through massive state intervention. Germany’s Federal Minister of Economics and Technology has now responded to these challenges with his “National Industrial Strategy 2030,” thereby triggering a lively debate: do we really need a more active industrial policy to promote the competitiveness of Germany and Europe?

Moderator Harald Schultz, ifo Institute
Industry development Simon Litsche, ifo Institute
Expert contributions Prof. Dr. Oliver Falck, ifo Institute
Dr. Andreas Fier, Deutsche Telekom AG
Dr. Robert Obermeier, Chamber of Industry and Commerce for Munich and Upper Bavaria

Trade Forum

Trade Logistics - Challenges on the Last Mile

The online trade is growing rapidly and with it the amount of goods shipments. Every year, more than 3 billion deliveries are made to customers, who demand ever faster and on-time delivery. The complexity on the last mile is growing and poses far-reaching challenges for retailers, logistics companies and local authorities. But how does online retailing organize its sales processes to be profitable and customer-oriented? How does a future-proof logistics processing in e-commerce work? Which urban trade logistics concepts relieve traffic?

Moderator Wolfgang Fischer, CityPartnerMünchen e.V.
Industry development Sabine Rumscheidt, ifo Institute

Construction Forum

Capacity Shortages are Increasing - What is to be done?

In particular, the strong revival of new residential construction and increased efforts to modernize the transport infrastructure have pushed capacity utilization in the construction industry to undreamt-of heights. While there have been complaints about a shortage of skilled tradesmen for some time now, the situation in the main construction industry also worsened considerably last year. Added to this are the pronounced capacity bottlenecks in public administration. The more difficult it is to recruit qualified workers, the more important measures for more efficient project execution will become in the future.

Moderator Dr. Josef Wallner, Bavarian Construction Industry Association e.V.
Industry development Ludwig Dorffmeister, ifo Institute
Expert contributions René Rimpler, German Confederation of Skilled Crafts (ZDH)
Prof. Dr. Peter Racky, University of Kassel

Service Sector Forum

Services in Global Competition

Rapid developments in information and communication technologies and the increasing integration of companies along global, digital process chains make services more and more tradable across borders. But how well are German service providers integrated into global value chains? Is Germany an attractive location for service providers from different countries? And where are options for action for politics and business to promote cross-border trade in services?

Moderator Dr. Robert Obermeier, Chamber of Industry and Commerce for Munich and Upper Bavaria
Industry development Przemyslaw Brandt, ifo Institute
Expert contributions Anita Wölfl, ifo Institute
Prof. Gabriel Felbermayr, Ph.D., ifo Institut
Dr. Indre Pohl/Joachim Ullerich, NTT DATA GmbH
