Prof. Hans-Werner Sinn auf der ifo Jahresversammlung 2015

Prof. Hans-Werner Sinn, former president of the ifo Institute, delivered a lecture entitled: “How Do We Save the Climate and How not to?” on Monday December 16, 2019.

The climate change needs to be fought. But how? Prof. Sinn shows that politics employ many useless and expensive instruments which resemble large actionism, but which do not achieve much except for privileges for some specific subgroups of the society. The Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) is ineffective and the volatility of wind and solar electricity is difficult to control. Electric vehicles are not more environmental friendlier per se. The amount of fuel that Europe does not use is shipped somewhere else. The owners of resources possibly extract even more than before as they are afraid of expropriation and what is being extracted is burnt as well. The lecture pleads for a return to nuclear electricity, reforestation and a worldwide emissions trading, that is enforced by a club of the willing.

Prof. Sinn gave his lecture in German.

We gratefully aknowledge support from the Bavarian Industry Association.
