Artificial Intelligence in Use at 13.3% of Companies in Germany
In Germany, 13.3% of companies are currently using artificial intelligence (AI), and 9.2% are planning to use it. A further 36.7% of all companies surveyed are discussing potential use cases. “The majority of all companies in Germany are currently looking into AI,” says industry expert Anna Wolf of the ifo Institute. AI-based systems process large amounts of data using algorithms to make quick decisions via automated data analysis.
“Companies from a wide range of industries use AI applications, including the automotive industry, manufacturers of machinery and equipment, the pharmaceutical industry, and the service sector,” Wolf says. Artificial intelligence is particularly widespread in manufacturing: one in three manufacturing companies already uses it or plans to use it. The figure is around 20% among service providers and in trade and 15% in construction. Almost all IT service providers deal with this topic or see possible applications.
AI is not on the rise everywhere. For around 40% of companies in Germany, AI is currently not an issue. In construction, this share is as high as 60%.
The question about attitudes toward artificial intelligence technology was posed by the ifo Institute on behalf of the Hanseatic Blockchain Institute e.V. as part of the ifo Business Survey for June 2023. The ifo Business Survey is based on approx. 9,000 monthly responses from businesses in manufacturing, the service sector, trade, and construction. Its findings here are calculated based on the weighted fractions of companies that fall into the answer options “in use,” “planned,” “under discussion,” and “not a topic” of a corresponding question in the ifo Business Survey.
