Information for Participants in ifo Online, E-Mail, Paper and Fax Surveys

Data protection and how we handle the personal data requested in our scientific surveys is very important to us. We pledge to handle your responses confidentially and provide you with the following information on the processing of your data according to Article12, 13 et seq. GDPR.

3. Scope and purpose of your personal data processing

Participation in our surveys is naturally voluntary. In principle, we only collect and use personal data insofar as this is required to conduct our surveys and research projects. When we request your participation in a specific survey, we explain its goals in detail and name our client e.g. German federal or state ministries or authorities in cases where we have been commissioned to conduct a study that is based on the survey results. You can rest assured that we only use your personal data for the purposes stated and that they will not be used in any other way.

4. Legal basis for processing personal data

The legal basis for processing personal data in the context of a research project is Article 6 paragraph 1 letter f and Article 89 GDPR. As a publicly-financed research institute, the ifo Institute has a clear and legitimate interest in conducting its business surveys of, for example, construction, the service sector, wholesaling and retailing, and manufacturing. During this process, we protect your rights and freedoms from infringement with appropriate technical and organisational measures; and guarantee that the basic principle of data minimisation is respected.

5. Data deletion and storage period

All personal data are deleted and/or completely anonymised immediately after the evaluation of the survey data in question; and on completion of any research related to them insofar as we are not obliged to store said data for legal reasons.

6. Your rights as a survey participant

6a) Right to information
According to Article 15 GDPR, you can demand confirmation from us of whether and if so, to what extent we have processed your personal data.

6b) Right to revision
According to Article 16 GDPR, you have the right to correct and/or complete the personal data that we hold insofar as they are incorrect or incomplete. We will make any corrections required immediately.

6c) Right to deletion
According to Article 17 GDPR, you can demand the immediate deletion of your personal data.

6d) Exceptions
Your rights may be limited insofar as exercising them may seriously hinder or prevent us from pursuing our scientific research goals as communicated at the outset.

7. Right of appeal

According to Article 21 paragraph 1 GDPR, you have the right to object to the processing of your personal data at any time for reasons arising from your special personal circumstances.

8. Right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority

According to Article 12 paragraph 2 letter d GDPR, you also have the right to lodge a complaint, which you can exercise by contacting the Bavarian State Agency for Data Protection, Postbox 606, 91511 Ansbach.
