The Society for the Promotion of Economic Research (Freunde des ifo Instituts) e.V. awards an annual prize for outstanding academic achievements in the field of empirical economic research. The prize is awarded to a researcher at the ifo Institute – preferably from the junior research area – with a publication of a scientific contribution in a renowned peer-reviewed journal. The award is decided by a committee consisting of the President of the ifo Institute, the Chairman of the Ifo Institute’s Scientific Advisory Board, and the Chairman of the Board of the Society for the Promotion of Economic Research (or their representative).

Award for Special Achievements in Third-Party Funded Research

The 2019 prize for special achievements in third-party funded research was awarded to the project team headed by Prof. Ludger Wößmann, head of the ifo Center for the Economics of Education, and Dr. Marc Piopiunik, economist at the ifo Center for the Economics of Education, for the project “Acquisition and Utilisation of Adult Skills – A Network for Analysing, Developing and Disseminating PIAAC”. The study was conducted from February 2015 to January 2019 in cooperation with other Leibniz institutes – especially GESIS – as part of a SAW project of the Leibniz Association. Also involved in the project were former ifo staff members Franziska Hampf and Prof. Simon Wiederhold.

This prize is awarded to projects with a high volume of third-party funding that are distinguished by acknowledged quality in terms of content. The work must have been completed within the last financial year, within the set deadlines and budget.

Special Prize

Due to the evaluation of the ifo Institute, 2019 was a special year for the Institute, and the Board of Directors awarded two special prizes to thank the staff who were particularly closely involved in the evaluation for their great commitment: the Communications Team for the relaunch of the website and the staff from several areas who were involved in the preparation of the evaluation itself.

The award ceremony in the public part of the ifo Annual Meeting (online event) on  18 June 2020 was held by Prof. Roland Berger, Chairman of the Society for the Promotion of Economic Research, Prof. Veronika Grimm, Deputy Chair of the ifo Institute’s Scientific Advisory Board, and Prof. Clemens Fuest, President of the ifo Institute.
