Shortage of Materials in German Manufacturing Eases Slightly

The shortage of materials in German manufacturing has eased slightly. In April, 75.0 percent of companies complained about bottlenecks and problems procuring intermediate products and raw materials. In March, it was 80.2 percent. This is the finding of an ifo Institute survey. “It would be wrong to describe the situation as completely relaxed,” said Klaus Wohlrabe, Head of Surveys at ifo. “In addition to the war in Ukraine, China is a growing cause for concern.”

Computer manufacturers have been hit the hardest by material shortages, with 91.9 percent reporting problems. The proportion also remains very high in the automotive industry: 89.1 percent. In the case of food and beverage manufacturers, the proportion reporting shortages has risen to around three quarters. In the chemical industry, by contrast, the proportion fell from 70.5 percent in March to 61.7 percent. “Right now, there are no signs that there will be substantial relief in the coming months,” Wohlrabe adds.
