Project

Family Policies and Redistribution: Impacts, Perceptions and Optimal Design (SFB)

Client: German Research Foundation
Project period: January 2021- December 2024
Research Areas:
Project team: Julia Baack, Maximilian Joseph Blömer, Lilly Fischer, Justyna Klejdysz, Marc Stöckli, Paul Schüle, Andreas Peichl

Tasks

The goal of this project is to improve our understanding of the optimal design of family policy reforms taking into account that individuals do not necessarily respond optimally to the incentives. The optimal design of family policy reforms requires knowledge about (a) behavioral responses of individuals to the incentives provided by the tax and transfer system and (b) preferences for redistribution of society. Partly building on these insights, we will also analyze the optimal design of policy reforms.

Methods

First, the project team will study the implications of parental leave duration and parental leave benefits for labor market behavior of mothers. Second, we will conduct survey experiments (based on SOEP-IS) to analyze determinants of inequality and fairness perceptions as well as preferences for redistribution, with a special focus on family related policies.
