Deaton Review Country Studies: A Transatlantic Comparison of Income Inequality and Inequality of Opportunity over Five Decades (TACI) – Case Study Germany.
Project period: April 2022 - March 2024
Research Areas:
Tasks
The aim of the project is to examine the development of inequalities in employment, education and income in a coherent framework in North America and Europe. The period of investigation covers the last decades and thus allows the analysis of long-term trends. In addition, developments before and during the Covid-19 pandemic will be examined.
The project focuses on
(1) the analysis of labor market inequalities,
(2) different education systems and their impact on income and inequalities, and
(3) country-specific tax and welfare systems and their distributional effects. The coordination of research teams from 17 countries enables cross-national analyses and comparisons from which economic policy reform options for Germany and other countries can be derived.
Methods
In order to be able to carry out cross-national analyses and comparisons, the cooperation within the 17 country-specific research teams participating in the project will be coordinated and a harmonized approach and treatment of variables will be agreed upon. The project team of the ifo Institute is in charge of the case study for Germany.
