Project

An Indicator of the Success of the Social Market Economy

Project team: Prof. Dr. Andreas Peichl, Prof. Dr. Sarah Necker, Dr. Mathias Dolls, Max Lay, Ann-Christin Rathje
Research Professor: Lisa Windsteiger

Tasks

The aim of the project is to develop an indicator for the social market economy that can be regularly updated on a permanent basis. The indicator takes into account three pillars: economic efficiency, social balance and environmental sustainability. A survey of international economists will be conducted to determine the variables that will be considered in the indicator. The variables are combined by weighting. The indicator is created for an international sample of countries, including the EU countries and others. In addition to pooling administrative data, regular surveys will be conducted to address perceptions of the social market economy and its challenges. We plan to produce high-profile publications (ifo Schnelldienst, Econ Pol Forum) on the one hand and scientific studies on the other, in which we will explain the indicator values with institutional variables and present the survey results.

Methods
