The largest German industry group, the automotive industry, has grown dynamically in the past ten years, and its share in output of total manufacturing increased accordingly. This trend was overlaid by a number of structural changes that resulted in a considerable decline in production depth and a relative worsening of employee productivity in comparison with that of total manufacturing.
