From an economics perspective, pursuing the fundamental climate- and environment-related goals of the German “Energiewende“ should take account of the other two goals of the so-called energy triangle, affordability and energy security, as well. The study at hand analyzes the challenges that the “Energiewende” entails from an economics as well as technological perspective when such an approach is chosen and discusses which measures should be undertaken for its cost-efficient implementation. Starting point of the study are the deficits of the market allocation on energy markets. The study devotes special attention to the design of the future electricity market as a prerequisite for a complete and efficient market integration of renewable energies.
