There are growing doubts as to whether size and growth in gross domestic product alone are sufficient to measure a society’s prosperity. To discuss this question, the German Bundestag set up a special commission at the beginning of 2011, which presented its final report in spring 2013. The Akademie für Politische Bildung Tutzing and the Ifo Institute used the publication of this report as an opportunity to organise an expert conference to discuss the report’s results. The conference was held at the Ifo Institute on 7 and 8 June 2013 and led by Dr. Wolfgang Quaisser, Akademie für Politische Bildung Tutzing, and Prof. Kai Carstensen, Ifo Institute. Selected conference presentations are published in this issue.
