On the design of structural funding for the whole of Germany: Requirements from an East German perspective

Now that the dispute over the future shape of federal-state financial relations seems to have been settled, at least for the time being, following the compromise reached between the federal government and the states in October, another issue is coming to the fore, namely how the "pan-German structural assistance" for economically weak regions agreed in the coalition agreement of the federal government is to be implemented. When the current EU Structural Fund funding period expires in 2020 at the latest, it will be necessary to redefine the regional development areas in Germany.
