Germany's current account surplus has been higher than the ceiling of 6% of nominal gross domestic product stipulated by the European Commission for over five years. In 2016 primary income accounted for 20% of Germany's current account surplus, while in the preceding years this figure was as high as 40%. This article offers a more detailed analysis of primary income, which mainly consists of capital income.
