Traumabitur 1,0 - Where does Saxony's educational elite come from?

The number of high school graduates with a dream grade of 1.0 has been rising for years. We use novel data at the level of individual schools in Saxony and investigate whether urbanity, school sponsorship and competition aspects can explain this increase. We do not find any differences between urban and rural areas or between public and private schools. However, in schools with higher competitive pressure, measured by the distance to the nearest school, the proportion of graduates with a 1.0 degree has increased more strongly in recent years. However, this does not explain the general trend towards excellent school-leaving qualifications.
