Do system differences that existed for over 40 years continue to have an effect 28 years after the reunification of Germany? The results of a new ifo study show that a constant process of rapprochement is underway in many areas of society, and that views in the two parts of the country rarely diverge. The attitudes of East Germans often converge with those of West Germans. In some cases, such as with regard to prevailing perceptions of gender roles, West Germans are orienting themselves towards the attitudes of East Germans.
