15 years of EU eastward enlargement: East German states profitieren most of new trade partnerships

The integration of the countries of Central and Eastern Europe into the European Union has had a positive effect on their trade relations with Germany. We show that the foreign trade of the new member states with Germany increased statistically significantly after their accession to the EU. In particular, the new German states were able to benefit from this and significantly expand their exports to Eastern Europe in recent years. Nevertheless, there are still considerable differences in the distribution of export sales between the federal states.
