Anyone who considers only the proportion of refugees in crime statistics is ignoring important factors such as people’s reporting behavior towards refugees or the age and gender structure of refugee populations. What’s more, the media pay too little attention to the specific, deeper causes of criminality among refugees. These could include the living conditions in refugee accommodation or refugees’ lack of orientation and perspective in Germany. In addition to these distorting and possible influencing factors, the article presents preventive measures to reduce refugees’ propensity to violence.
