Germany’s large current account surpluses in recent years clearly exceed the targets set in the European Union’s Macroeconomic Imbalance Procedure. This article provides a brief overview of the development of current account balances in Germany and the rest of the world over the past year. It shows that the effects on current account balances of the trade conflict between the US and China have so far been rather minor.
