There are considerable regional differences in coronavirus infection rates not only between the Länder but also within individual Länder. This is shown by an analysis of the data for total infections as well as new Covid-19 infections for the 401 districts and independent cities in Germany and for 419 municipalities in Saxony. The new infections are increasingly concentrated in regional hotspots that were previously affected only to a small degree. Therefore, the pandemic should be contained with targeted local measures.
