Tracking the Economic Recovery across Europe: A Glance on France

This joint study with the Technical University of Munich and the digital bank N26 shows how the Corona pandemic and lockdowns have affected the finances of European consumers. In detail, the study examines the income, spending and savings of young, urban N26 customers in France compared to their counterparts in Germany, Austria, Italy and Spain. The main findings are that savings have increased in all countries considered, income losses in 2020 were made up for, but spending remains well below pre-crisis levels.

The study is the starting point of the ifo-N26-Economic Monitor that uses financial data to measure economic recovery in a timely manner. Key indicators are consumer spending and savings in the largest European economies.
