Membership of the ifo Institute – Leibniz Institute for Economic Research at the University of Munich is available to individuals and organisations in Germany and around the world. The Ifo Institute is a registered society according to German law (eingetragener Verein – e.V.) and is governed according to its Bylaws. The ifo Institute is entered in the register of associations in Munich under the number 4419 and is recognized as a non-profit organisation.

Our doctoral program is integrated in the Graduate Program at the Munich Graduate School of Economics (MGSE) and is aimed at graduates with an excellent university degree. Our doctoral students complete their dissertation generally with above-average success. After their doctorate, the doors are open to them for an academic career at the university or a career in other institutions, in companies or in political consulting.

Event Series

The public session of the ifo Annual Meeting is dedicated to a current economic policy topic and brings together science, business and politics.

Forecast Series

The Joint Economic Forecast analyses and forecasts the economic situation in Germany. The forecasts are conducted twice a year: one forecast is published in spring followed by another in autumn. The Joint Economic Forecasts act as a point of reference fort he forecasts made by the German federal government. The Joint Economic Forecast is a joint research project conducted by several economic research institutes. Their cooperation is characterised by a dialogue between different competing theoretical and methodical approaches, forming the best possible basis for analysis and forecasts.

German Federal Minister of Education Anja Karliczek has appointed the Director of the ifo Center for Industrial Organization and New Technologies, Oliver Falck, to the newly established Council for Technological Sovereignty of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

The strength of the ifo Institute's scientific achievements is also reflected in its success in the scientific competition for research grants. The research grants acquired in the scientific competition have a double effect for the ifo Institute: on the one hand, they increase the scope for research, and on the other hand, they make it possible to work on fundamental policy-oriented issues and thus improve the basis for policy advice by the ifo Institute.

The annual report is the accountability report of the ifo Institute and is published on the day of the annual meeting.

Publication Series

The ifo DICE Report was a quarterly, English-language journal featuring articles on institutional regulations and economic policy measures that offer country comparative analyses. The DICE Database (Database for Institutional Comparisons of Economies) continues to offer an overview of institutions in an international comparison.

Event Series

At the centre of the EUROCONSTRUCT activities are conferences, organised twice a year at changing European cities by the national partner institute, with the focus on the cyclical development of construction activity and on further topics with direct relevance for the construction sector.

Companies and organisations are subject to the far-reaching antitrust laws. They themselves have to assess whether their conduct complies with antitrust laws. The ifo Institute offers its members, the members of its advisory bodies and its staff a legally sound basis for exchanging opinions and experience that complies with antitrust law. Ifo Institute meetings do not deal with antitrust issues, nor do they create an opportunity for or promote agreements or decisions that do not comply with antitrust law. The ifo Institute will not suffer any forms of conduct that do not comply with antitrust law.

Economists will meet online from 27 to 30 September 2020 for the Annual Conference of the Verein für Socialpolitik, the association of German-speaking economists. Amongst them are many ifo researchers.

Survey Series

The ifo Business Climate Index is a highly-regarded early indicator of economic developments in Germany published on a monthly basis. Detailed results of the ifo Business Survey are published in the ifo Konjunkturperspektiven (in German).

The Handbook of ifo Surveys provides an overview of the ifo Institute's surveys as well as the resulting economic indicators and their use for forecasting economic indicators.
