Supply Problems Weigh on ifo Business Climate (October 2021)
Sentiment in the German economy has clouded over. The ifo Business Climate Index fell from 98.9 points in September to 97.7 points in October. Skepticism is increasingly evident in expectations. Companies’ assessments of their current situation are also less positive. Supply problems are giving businesses headaches. Capacity utilization in manufacturing is falling. Sand in the wheels of the German economy is hampering recovery.
Business Climate in German Retail Improves Markedly Before Easter
The ifo Business Climate in retail brightened noticeably in March. The indicator for assessments of the current business situation rose to -7.3 points, up from -18.1 points* in February. There was a clear improvement in business expectations, too. “The pessimism that has been such a feature of recent times is receding. Business in the run-up to Easter has apparently brought a ray of hope for many retailers,” says ifo expert Patrick Höppner.
ifo Business Climate Saxony Rises Slightly (December 2020)
The ifo Business Climate Index Saxony rose slightly in December. The barometer of business sentiment climbed from 91.2 to 91.5 points, as survey participants’ assessments of the business situation were much more positive. Their expectations for the coming six months were a little more pessimistic.
ifo Business Climate Index Rises (December 2022)
Sentiment in the German economy has brightened considerably. The ifo Business Climate Index rose to 88.6 points in December, up from 86.4 points (seasonally adjusted) in November. Companies assessed their current situation as better again. This comes on the heels of six consecutive falls in the indicator for the current situation. Expectations also improved noticeably. German business is entering the holiday season with a sense of hope.
ifo Business Climate Eastern Germany: Index Decreased (May 2023)
Sentiment among eastern German companies cooled a bit in May. The ifo Business Climate Index for the entire regional economy fell to 96.2 points, down from 96.5 points in April. The companies surveyed slightly raised their assessments of the current situation, while their outlook for the next six months worsened noticeably.
Mood among Saxony’s Companies Continues to Plummet (April 2020)
Sentiment among companies in Saxony continued to nosedive in April, as the ifo Business Climate Index for Saxony plunged from 89.8 to 78.0 points. This is in line with the strong slump in eastern Germany and across Germany as a whole. The companies surveyed lowered their assessments of the current situation and business expectations to an unprecedented extent – the coronavirus crisis has hit all areas of Saxony’s economy.

Economic Experts Survey: Further Decline in Inflation Expected in the Short Term (1st Quarter 2024)
How are economists’ expectations for future price developments evolving worldwide? Can we observe a decline in inflation expectations? The latest wave of the Economic Expert Survey (EES) by the ifo Institute and the Institute for Swiss Economic Policy examines economists’ inflation expectations at a global level. The result: although inflation expectations worldwide remain well above central banks’ inflation target, there is a further decline in the expected inflation rate for 2024 compared to previous quarters. However, long-term inflation expectations show a stagnating or rising trend.

More of Germany’s Consumer-Related Companies to Raise Prices
More of Germany’s consumer-related companies are planning to raise their prices. The ifo price expectations for these industries rose from 32.3 points* in December to 32.9 points in January. Price expectations increased noticeably among consumer-related service providers in particular, from 37.3 points* to 42.1 points. In retail, by contrast, the proportion of companies planning price increases declined; the balance there fell from 30.0 points* to 28.6 points. “This suggests that in the coming months, inflation will subside, but only slowly,” says Timo Wollmershäuser, Head of Forecasts at ifo.
Eurozone Economic Outlook: Eurozone GDP starts to recover (September 2020)
In the second quarter, global economic activity declined sharply due to COVID-19 pandemic containment measures. International merchandise trade decreased in volume by historic 12.5%, despite a rebound in June (+7.6%).

Sentiment in the German economy has suffered a setback. The ifo Business Climate Index fell to 91.7 points in May, after 93.4 points in April. This marks the first decline after six increases in a row. Driving this development are the significantly more pessimistic expectations. Managers are somewhat less satisfied with their current situation. German companies are skeptical about the upcoming summer.
ifo Economic Forecast Autumn 2023: German Economy Continues to Cool
Price-adjusted gross domestic product will decline by 0.4% this year. In the next two years, economic output is expected to increase by 1.4% and 1.2%. The inflation rate will fall further from an average of 6.0% this year to 2.6% next year and 1.9% the year after.

Sentiment among German exporters has turned considerably brighter at the beginning of the year. The ifo Export Expectations rose to 17.4 points in January, up from 12.9 points in December. German manufacturing is starting the year in a hopeful mood.

Business Climate in Germany’s Chemical Industry Improves Slightly
The business climate in Germany’s chemical industry improved somewhat in November, with the indicator rising to -12.8 points, up from -14.7 points* in October. This means the mood among chemical companies remained subdued, according to the latest ifo survey. “The long-awaited measures in the energy package have obviously not met the chemical industry’s hopes,” says industry expert Anna Wolf of the ifo Institute.

German companies are planning to lay off less staff. The ifo Employment Barometer climbed to 93.2 points in July after measuring 92.3 points in June. But the labor market is not out of the woods yet. Layoffs are still planned in many places, especially in industry. However, pessimism has declined noticeably in the last two months.
