Fast growing firms are crucial for regional employment growth. International studies show that only a small share of all firms accounts for most of the increase in regional employment. This study analyses the growth dynamics and its determinants for Eastern German firms. To do so, ifo Dresden cooperated with Rambøll Management Consulting and Creditreform Rating AG. The study starts with an overview of the current literature that describes determinants of fast growing firms. The study shows that nearly 50 percent of all newly created jobs in Eastern Germany have occurred in fast growing firms, i. e., by firms that grow within a three years period by at least 10 percent per year. Finally, the study provides a typology of effective growth strategies for firms and suggests potential policies that may accelerate firm growth.
