Language-Skill Investments and Migration Decisions
Project period: March 2018 - July 2020
Research Areas:
Tasks
This project collects pre-migration survey data in several countries about adult-age language learning. The survey data is used to analyse language learning and migration intentions focusing on different motives for migration in multi-country and gender-specific contexts. The results will contribute to a better understanding of the characteristics and motives of potential migrants and allow policy makers to design immigration and integration policies taking these factors into account.
The project consists of two work packages (WP). WP 1 will be concerned with two surveys. The first survey will be conducted among language course participants at Goethe Institutes in different countries. The second survey will be conducted among university students in different countries. Based on the collected data, WP 2 includes four paper projects: the first focusing on the motives of language learning, the second studying migration intentions, the third analysing the role of internationally applicable qualifications compared to country-specific ones for migration (intentions) and the fourth studying the investment decisions in language skills in the presence of potentially gender-specific migration incentives. The collected data will allow further analysis beyond the funded research projects in the future
Methods
The project will involve data collection and empirical analysis using quantitative methods.
