Perspectives for a Sustainable Development of the Coal Regions in Structural Change
Project period: October 2019 – March 2022
Research Areas:
Tasks
In order to derive sensible recommendations for action in the brown-coal regions that ought to be developed, analysis of past structural changes is a helpful starting point. In this project the shipyard crisis in Bremen/Bremerhaven, the displacement of coal in the Ruhr area, the decline of the textile industry in the Münsterland as well as the change in the East German chemistry triangle are focused on. A focal point in the analysis is how sustainability was handled during the structural changes, which however often was a minor point of interest.
Methods
A systematic literature review is undertaken which looks at scientific articles, primary sources and press coverage.
Data and other sources
Scientific publications, political documents, newspaper articles
Results
Sustainability was not essential in past structural changes.
