Expert Studies on Fundamental Issues of Public Finance, Taxation, and Economic Policy

Tasks

For the conception and implementation of political decisions on taxation, public finance, and economic policy, the Federal Ministry of Finance requires input of scientific experts. In this project, ifo and DIW provide a series of expert studies in specific topics which are of concern of the Federal Ministry of Finance. The expert studies will be prepared within a few weeks. This enables the Federal Ministry of Finance to participate in political discussions with evidence-based concepts.

Methods

The ifo institute Munich and the DIW Berlin work in cooperation to prepare expert studies to the Federal Ministry of Finance. Both the ifo institute and the DIW are among Germany’s and Europe’s leading economic research institutions and have unique expertise in the areas of taxation, public finance, and economic policy.

The methodological approach of each expert study depends on the research question stated by the ministry. Depending on the topic, both the ifo and the DIW use their extensive network of researchers in the fields of public economics, monetary macroeconomics, and international economics to gain additional insights. Both also provide expertise to questions regarding energy and climate policy, financial market regulation, industrial economics, as well as economic and legal impacts of digitalization.
