Tasks

The German government has taken extensive measures to contain the spread of the coronavirus. However, the regulations and restrictions differ from industry to industry or have very different effects. In addition, the extent to which the individual sectors are affected not only depends on the restrictions imposed, but also, regarding exit strategies, is determined by the structural conditions that existed before the crisis. The aim of this Corona Industry Atlas is to use the structural starting position of the individual industries to provide indications about the impact of the coronavirus crisis. This is done based on the current state of information at the time the reports were completed. Considering the structural characteristics and various development indicators, the intensity of the business failure as well as the exit options and the economic prospects are also assessed regarding the post-corona times.

Methods

Based on the structural characteristics and various other development indicators, the experts at the ifo Institute derive the extent to which various industries are affected by the coronavirus crisis. The Corona Affectedness Radar visually summarizes the result. It is in the form of a spider web graphic and depicts various aspects: the economic importance of the industry, the intensity of the business failure, the risk of production failures due to a lack of staff and opportunities due to the pandemic. The branch representation starts with a description of the structural characteristics of the respective industry. Among other things, the annual industry turnover, the industry structure, legal forms, the employment structure, the possibilities of spatial distancing during work or home office use and capacities are explained. In a further step, the branch-specific regulations and aid measures of the federal and state governments are dealt with and their particularities are worked out for the respective branch. The assessment of various development indicators is an important aspect for the description of the industry. These are underpinned by the current results of the ifo business surveys. Options for an exit from the crisis are derived from all these aspects and the economic prospects regarding future development are assessed. The reports are updated regularly.

Data and other sources

Data from official statistics and other primary and secondary statistical sources serve as the information basis, as well as results from ifo surveys or from surveys of other institutions.

Results

The industry reports are published in text form with additional graphics. The industry-specific structural features and the regulatory measures are summarized in separate tables (PDF). The Corona Impact Radar contained in every report provides a summary of how the respective industry is affected by the coronavirus crisis at a glance.
