Closing Ranks or Deadlock – Is Europe Managing an Effective Asylum and Integration Policy?

The European Union's latest asylum compromise says goodbye to the Dublin system and provides for a more even distribution of refugees throughout the EU. In parallel, agreements are being made with countries such as Tunisia to influence migration movements already outside the EU. But do these agreements solve the current problems? And what happens in EU countries when the refugees arrive? In Germany, municipalities are finding themselves at their breaking point. The administrative processes are too complicated and too lengthy. Integration into the labor market – where possible – is sometimes slower than in other EU countries. Yet studies show that labor force participation is an important step for integration. So how can integration policy be improved?
