ifo Export Expectations Fall (August 2022)

Sentiment among German exporters has worsened again. The ifo Export Expectations fell to minus 2.7 points in August, down from minus 0.4 points in July. Companies do not expect any dynamic development in their exports. High gas prices and a weak global economic environment are weighing on the outlook.

A majority of industries expect exports to decline, but vehicle manufacturers and their suppliers are expecting significant growth in exports. Increased international sales are expected in the clothing industry as well as among manufacturers of data processing equipment and electronic and optical products. The mood is particularly bleak in the chemical industry, where expectations fell to their lowest level since April 2020. Among printing companies, it even reached an all-time low.
