In order to increase the visibility of solo self-employed and micro enterprises, the ifo Institute has been publishing a new indicator since December 2021: the Jimdo-ifo Business Climate Index for the Self-Employed, which is based on the ifo Business Surveys. Similar to the overall index, all sectors are taken into account, with a focus on the service sector. To attract new participants, we are working on this business climate index in cooperation with Jimdo, a provider of online tools for solo self-employed and small businesses, and the Association of Founders and Self-Employed People of Germany (VGSD e.V.).

With Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, a new crisis superseded the coronavirus pandemic and defined the public debate. The impending gas and energy shortage fueled inflation, which the ifo Institute had highlighted back in 2021 in the context of the pandemic and supply bottlenecks. With our annual report 2022 we give a summary and provide an overview both of the development of the ifo Institute in the past year and of its additional research and work priorities. We have compiled a selection of the highlights from the annual report for you.

In addition to our overall indices and the regularly published export expectations and employment barometer, we publish further results of the ifo Business Surveys - at the overall, sector or industry level. How do companies assess price developments? Are they worried about their existence? Is there a shortage of orders or materials? Especially in times of crisis, companies' assessments reveal a lot about future developments.

The strength of the ifo Institute's scientific achievements is also reflected in its success in the scientific competition for research grants. The research grants acquired in the scientific competition have a double effect for the ifo Institute: on the one hand, they increase the scope for research, and on the other hand, they make it possible to work on fundamental policy-oriented issues and thus improve the basis for policy advice by the ifo Institute.

Forecast Series

The ifo Institute publishes an economic forecast four times per year. The forecast focuses on developments in the German economy for a period of up to two years. In view of the close links between the German economy and the world economy, and particularly the European economy, ifo also forecasts developments in the European Union and other important countries.
