Alternative Indicators to Measure Area Efficiency

Tasks

The German government's sustainability strategy aims at reducing the additional area taken up for settlement and transport purposes to less than 74 acres per day by 2030. Compared to the actual value, this represents almost a halving. However, this is countered by the fact that economic development is usually accompanied by the development of previously unused land and that a growing population increases the demand for settlement and transport land. For this reason, it is proposed not to define an absolute target for land use, but to optimize the efficiency of land use instead. This article develops a method to calculate an indicator of land use efficiency by taking into account population and employment figures.

The study will be conducted within a framework agreement with the Chamber of Commerce and Industry for Munich and Upper Bavaria to provide objective, scientifically-based economic advisory work. Details
