ifo Institute, Munich, 2018

Section: Forum – Wealth Taxation

The interest in wealth taxation both in academia and politics has increased considerably in recent years in response to the growth in wealth concentration and income inequality that have occurred in most OECD countries. Most prominently, Piketty (2013) proposed a world wealth tax as an instrument for reducing global inequality. The Forum articles in the ifo DICE Report 2/2018 assess the viability of wealth taxes against the backdrop of the new the theoretical literature on optimal capital taxation and experiences with wealth and inheritance taxes in several countries.
