Mandatory pension splitting as a replacement for the widow’s pension would leave most married couples in Germany worse off financially. This is the conclusion reached by a new study by the ifo Institute. In June 2026, the German Pension Commission had called for a review of survivor benefits. The ifo study takes up that call and calculates pension splitting as one possible design option. “Even if one spouse benefits from pension splitting, the couple as a whole would lose out in almost all cases,” says Marcel Thum, Director of ifo Dresden. “The statutory pension insurance system would benefit, as its expenditures would decrease significantly if the widow’s pension were replaced by pension splitting.”

In April 2026, an average employee had to work for about five minutes to afford a liter of fuel. That’s according to a calculation by the ifo Institute based on wage and fuel price development. According to the experts, rising fuel prices are no greater a burden on employees in Germany than in previous years. “Although the closure of the Strait of Hormuz has driven up prices, the burden on the average employee in Germany is not unusually high by historical standards,” says Marcel Thum, Director of ifo Dresden. 

The US tariffs of 15 percent on EU goods have different regional effects on the local economy in Germany. That’s according to a new study by the ifo Institute on the economic impact of US tariffs on districts and district-free cities. “There is a clear north-south divide: While Potsdam even records a slight gain, industrial locations such as Salzgitter, Dingolfing-Landau, Wolfsburg, and Ingolstadt face severe losses,” says Marcel Thum, Director of ifo Dresden.

The pension system in Germany urgently needs to be reformed. Otherwise, the costs will rise unchecked, and the burden for future generations will be unacceptable. This is the conclusion of a report by the ifo Institute for the Friedrich Naumann Foundation. “Germany is facing a dramatic demographic challenge. Without reforms, the contribution rate in the statutory pension insurance system is likely to rise from 18.6 percent to 22 percent by 2050 – with serious consequences for employees and companies,” warns Marcel Thum, Director of ifo Dresden  and co-author of the report.

America’s tariff policy affects the German federal states economically in very different ways, according to a new study by the ifo Institute. “While Saarland, Lower Saxony and Baden-Württemberg are losing the most value added, Saxony-Anhalt and the northern German states are shrinking the least,” says Marcel Thum, Managing Director of ifo Dresden. “Structural differences between the federal states, such as a strong presence of the automotive industry, are decisive,” adds ifo economic expert Robert Lehmann.

The existence of the Dresden branch of the ifo Institute is secured for the time being. This is the result of the budget vote in the Saxon state parliament last Thursday. “We are very pleased that intensive and constructive discussions with the Saxon state government and members of the Saxon state parliament have made it possible to continue the excellent research of the ifo branch in Dresden,” says ifo President Clemens Fuest. Due to short-term cuts in the original draft of the double budget for the years 2025 and 2026, the ifo Institute would have been forced to close the branch in the future.

In Sachsen liegt die Inflationsrate seit 2023 deutlich über der gesamtdeutschen Rate. Ähnlich sieht es für die anderen ostdeutschen Flächenländer aus. Ursächlich für die Unterschiede sind kräftigere Preissteigerungen in Sachsen für Strom, Gas und Fernwärme. „Es ist überraschend, dass die Preisentwicklung für Energie in Sachsen von der gesamtdeutschen Entwicklung abweicht, da diese Preise üblicherweise auf nationalen und internationalen Märkten festgelegt werden“, erklärt Marcel Thum, Geschäftsführer der ifo Niederlassung Dresden.

The public sector in Germany is exacerbating staffing problems for the private sector. Employment in the public sector has increased in recent years, as data from the German Federal Statistical Office and the State Statistical Office of Saxony show. Instead, public administration should have been driving forward digitalization in order to save on staff through the efficiency gains made. The public sector had inadequately prepared for the decline in the working-age population. “In addition, costs are rising because the wages of public employees are aligned with those in the private sector without becoming equally more productive. Taxpayers are the ones having to bear these additional costs,” says ifo researcher Marcel Thum.

Voters of right-wing populist parties are increasingly in favor of dismantling the welfare state in order to be able to compete with other countries. This is according to a survey of 12,000 voters in Germany, France, Spain, and the United Kingdom. “The right-wing populist spectrum sees the welfare state as a form of redistribution towards immigrants,” says Marcel Thum, Director of the ifo Institute’s Dresden Branch.

Experts from the ifo Institute advise against increasing social security contributions by making interest, dividends, and rent subject to compulsory contributions. “Depending on the assumptions, expanding the assessment base would result in only a moderate increase in income subject to compulsory contributions – a rise between 2.4 and 4.0 percent,” write researchers Anne Steuernagel and Marcel Thum from the ifo branches in Fürth and Dresden.

Expanding the obligation to pay contributions will not be enough to finance the social security systems in Germany in the long term, according to calculations by the ifo Institute based on the Socio-Economic Panel. “Discussions are ongoing concerning an expansion of the obligation to pay contributions to all types of income, in other words to include interest, profit, and rental income. However, the additional revenue this would generate would be negligible,” says Joachim Ragnitz from the ifo Institute’s Dresden Branch.

Falschnachrichten werden in den Sozialen Medien meist geteilt, ohne dass der Teilende weiß, dass es sich um Fake News handelt. Menschen, die sich im politischen Raum rechts einordnen, streuen diese eher als andere. „Und ältere Menschen tragen viel weniger zur Verbreitung von Falschnachrichten bei als Jüngere“, sagt Marcel Thum von der ifo Niederlassung in Dresden. Dies sind Ergebnisse einer neuen Studie zu Fake News, die jetzt in der Fachzeitschrift „Scientific Reports“ veröffentlicht wurde. In Deutschland teilten 17 Prozent versehentlich Fake News, die sie für wahr halten, während es im Vereinigten Königreich 21 Prozent waren. Etwa 12 Prozent der Befragten wollten mindestens eine Nachricht teilen, die sie als Falschnachricht erkannt hatten. 

Vom Jahrhunderthochwasser betroffene sächsische Gemeinden haben sich besser entwickelt als nicht überflutete Gemeinden. Die Bevölkerung entwickelte sich dort pro Jahr um etwa einen viertel Prozentpunkt besser als in den Regionen, die verschont geblieben sind. Dies zeigt eine neue Untersuchung des ifo Instituts Dresden und des Hamburgischen WeltWirtschaftsInstituts (HWWI). „Da die Menschen die Risiken langfristig nicht über eine Pflichtversicherung tragen müssen, die das Risiko realistisch widerspiegelt, sind die Gegenden nach wie vor als Wohnlagen sehr attraktiv“, sagt Marcel Thum, der Leiter der Dresdner Niederlassung des ifo Instituts.
