German Export Expectations Rise (March 2025)

The ifo Export Expectations have once again improved slightly, rising in March to -1.6 points, up from -4.7 points in February. “There is a glimmer of hope in export business,” says Klaus Wohlrabe, Head of Surveys at ifo. “However, future development on the global markets in light of the tariff threats remains highly uncertain.”

The number of sectors expecting an increase in international sales has risen significantly, most clearly in the leather goods and beverages segments. The electrical industry is optimistic about being able to increase its exports in the coming months. Sentiment has also turned around in the automotive industry, although the outlook here remains cautious. By contrast, the food industry expects a slight decline in exports. The outlook for the metal sector is still pessimistic, but no longer as pronounced as in previous months. The same applies to clothing manufacturers.
