Energy and Climate Economics
The Energy and Climate Economics area is organized by Maximilian Auffhammer of the University of California, Berkeley. Its goal is to promote cutting-edge research on economic issues related to natural resources, energy markets, climate change and climate policy. Studying and addressing climate change is an issue that combines theoretical and empirical research across subfields in environmental and resource economics. Our interests span a wide range of topics including the design of climate policies and climate agreements, the promotion of renewable energy, the functioning of fossil fuel markets, and natural resource management. Policy intervention in markets is often motivated by climate, air pollution and natural resource scarcity concerns. An important aim of research in this area is to improve our understanding of the implications and unintended consequences of various policies, both for policies that have climate change as their primary concern and policies with other primary objectives.
Market failures have led to the climate crisis and unprecedented degradation of natural resources. Addressing these challenges - while improving welfare across the planet - is at the heart of environmental and resource economics.
Maximilian Auffhammer is the George Pardee Jr. Professor of International Sustainable Development at the University of California Berkeley. He received his B.S. in environmental science from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1996, a M.S. in environmental and resource economics at the same institution in 1998 and a Ph.D. in economics from UC San Diego in 2003. He joined the faculty at UC Berkeley in 2003. His research focuses on environmental and resource economics, energy economics and applied econometrics with a focus on the economic impacts of climate change and air pollution. He is a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research, a Humboldt Fellow, and a former lead author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). His research has appeared in The American Economic Review, the Review of Economic Studies, The Review of Economics and Statistics, The Economic Journal, the Proceedings of the National Academies of Sciences, the Journal of Environmental Economics and Management, The Energy Journal and other academic journals. Professor Auffhammer is the recipient of the 2017 Cheit Teaching Award in the Haas School of Business, the 2009 Campus Distinguished Teaching Award, the 2007 Cozzarelli Prize awarded by the National Academies of Sciences, and the 2007 Sarlo Distinguished Mentoring Award. He has been actively involved in environmental policy advising at the state and national level. He has also been a dedicated Bayern Munich fan since 1978.

The Distinguished CESifo Affiliate Award, aimed at encouraging talented young scholars, is awarded to the best paper presented by a young author at each of the CESifo Area conferences. Accepted candidates are invited to attend the Area Conference to which they have been nominated and present their paper. An award committee will judge the papers (and presentations) and select a winner. Nominations will be considered for candidates who are either close to completion of the PhD, or who have completed their PhD in the previous five years. The same limit applies to co-authors in the case of papers with multiple authors. The criteria for the award are scientific originality, policy relevance and quality of exposition. The winning paper will appear in the CESifo Working Paper Series.
